Pi Day Party!

The number π is a mathematical constant, the ratio of a circle‘s circumference to its diameter, approximately equal to 3.14159. It has been represented by the Greek letter “π” since the mid-18th century though it is also sometimes spelled out as “pi“. (Wiki) Pi has been celebrated on March 14th since March 14th is 3.14.  March 14th is also Einsteins Birthday. So the best way to celebrate anyone’s birthday is to throw a kick-ass party! This year my Pi Day Party was located at Lowell Makes. It was such a great party, I managed to throw my back out! Whoa! 🙂 Here are some pictures and some things I did to get ready for the party.

I made Pi Day Shirts for myself and Mike.  I bought some black Cotton shirts ($5.00 from Walmart, or $4.00 from Ocean State Job Lot). Then I put a piece of cardboard inside and duck taped off the design. The fabric exposed was going to get sprayed with bleach. Next time I do this I’m going to try to use a bleach pen. The longer the bleach sits the whiter it should bleach but I washed off the bleach not far in because it didn’t need to be white. It was interesting to see it change colors before your eyes.

I printed some Cookie cutters on the 3D Printer. The single wall construction of the Cookie cutter was strong and durable enough for multiple cookies! It’s a Raspberry/Pi, No it’s a cookie! No It’s a Raspberry/Pi, No It’s a cookie! 🙂

Lots of Pies were consumed too! Apple Pie, Blueberry Pie, Raspberry Pie and Apple Pie Cookies were made and enjoyed!! All Pies had the Pi Symbol cut into the top with the cookie cutter to remind you that it’s a pie 🙂

I also made a Raspberry Pi Computer Cake…because lets celebrate EVERYTHING PI, PIE, and 3.14 🙂

We also consumed Pizza Pies too!! When it was time to cut the cake I called for a little back up in the eating field. We had the Electronic Horizons folks come down and join us for food. 🙂 And Boy did they! I’m not sure if it was the word Cake, or the word Free, but one of them started the stampede and we could hear them running…as if there was bulls chasing them down the stairs the space went from 15 people to 35 people in a heart beat! 🙂 Thankfully, I started to serve the cake before they got there otherwise our guests at the pi party might have been run over!

I will keep them in mind next time I make too much food. 🙂

Thanks to everyone who made it out for my Pi Day Party! I had a great time! It was so nice to see all of you! The party went so well, by the end of the night my back was killing me. (We weren’t even dancing…explain this one clarissa!) The next day I tried to take it easy and relax the back, I guess I made it worse since I was unable to even move on Sunday. Ugh. I guess, I’m officially too old to party!

Cantaloupe Carving!

For whatever reason my work has scheduled me for 3 days on 4 day off…which is nice, Big long weekend for me. Today being day 2 of my 4 day weekend I woke up with the excitement to do something, to learn something new. I’ve been watching youtube videos for a week about how to carve watermelons and fruits into spectacular decorations…I figured, why not? So picked up the cantaloupe off the table and got to work. I learned really quickly that fruit carving was not much different from pumpkin carving, except it’s a sweeter smell and way less sticky. A little here a little there cutting, trimming, and shaving. And TADA! I finished my first cantaloupe carving. Only took me an hour to be happy with it, 2 hours to be very happy with it, and a 3rd hour to decide to stop while i’m ahead before i do something drastic and hate it. 🙂 I really hope it lasts for saturday for the Lowell Makes meeting. 🙂

Here’s my finished work! 🙂

The lightbulb kinda glows too when the right light hits it, since I made the walls of the lightbulb very thin.

Mish-mash and ALL of the things…

It’s been a while since I’ve posted. Here is a bit of what I’ve been up to. I’ve allowed Mike to join a makerspace called “Lowell Makes”. Which is here in Lowell, Massachusetts. By allowed, I mean he joined and then told me about it…there was no me saying ‘Ok’ at all. If you haven’t heard of makerspaces they are basically a basement for a person who lives in an apartment or condo that doesn’t normally have a basement. It is a space where people can come and create, do, make, prototype and design. It’s a space full of tools that you might not normally have access to all in one space. Depending on the needs of the people the space will have different items. Currently we have a woodshop (which is lacking walls, but more about that later)

Mike is very excited about the space and loves to help out making the space great! This makerspace has only been around since November and has a lot of work to go. They currently have a fundraiser over at indigogo to help purchase the walls to enclose to woodshop and stop the dust from caking up the walls and computers. Along with a dust collector system which will really help the space and keep it safe for the wood shop workers. I am Excited for the hard work going into the place and it’s so cool to see it come together. Every day there is something new, a new pile of rubble, a new wall being built, and new bathroom. Currently the furniture is in a new place every day. Unique little nooks of tables float around the space depending on how people use the space. It’s awesome to see the place transform.
